Opening the clinic was just the beginning of the story. Keeping it open will be the real challenge. That’s why Milton and Fred recently launched a nonprofit organization called the Lwala Community Alliance, established to keep the clinic funded and supplied with drugs. Right now there is not enough money to supply the clinic with ARV’s for patients with HIV. They still need funds to build a maternity ward. And to combat the problem of retaining medical staff, the LCA is planning to send qualified villagers to school for training in exchange for several years of service at the clinic.
