Many of our viewers have expressed interest in getting involved in the work featured in Halogen’s series “Penny Revolution.” There are two ways to participate.  1) as investments, 2) as loans.

For “Investment” opportunities:

  • www.microplace.com – “Your investments can earn a return while helping the poor lift themselves from poverty.”
  • calvertfoundation.com – Blending Financial and Social Returns  – For 15 years, Calvert Foundation, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, has been working to make community investment a safe and logical option for all investors seeking to make a positive social impact. We use investment capital, rather than conventional philanthropy, to create a sustainable, scalable model that enables nonprofit organizations and social enterprises to address critical social problems.

For microfinancing “loans”:

  • www.kiva.org – “It all starts with our Field Partners, which are microfinance institutions operating around the world. Our Field Partners approve and disburse a microloan to an entrepreneur in their community. They take a picture of the entrepreneur and write down the entrepreneur’s story.”  This is more “hands-on.” The person wishing to loan money can select who receives it.

For those interested in seeing a variety of organizations around the world go to:

  • www.microfinancegateway.org - “Microfinance Gateway is the most comprehensive online resource for the global microfinance community. The website features research and publications, original articles, organization and consultant profiles, and the latest industry announcements, news, events, and job opportunities.  Our mission is to advance knowledge and encourage innovation within the microfinance industry. We seek to create an interactive platform for knowledge exchange and engagement among our diverse user base, which includes microfinance practitioners, donors, networks, consultants, service providers, academics and policy makers.”

These sites were recommended by the Microcredit Summit Organization.  Based in DC, the group is an international campaign that brings together microcredit practitioners, advocates, educational institutions, donor agencies, international financial institutions, non-governmental organizations and others involved with microcredit to promote best practices in the field, to stimulate the interchanging of knowledge, and to work towards reaching our goals. The Microcredit Summit Campaign is a project of the RESULTS Educational Fund, a U.S.-based grassroots advocacy organization committed to ending hunger and poverty.
