The result: One Day on Earth, a living time capsule that challenges Henry David Thoreau’s statement “we live but a fraction of our lives.”

The more than 3,000 hours of video footage for One Day on Earth reveals the diversity of the world’s community. A man scuffs his knees in Brazil during a pilgrimage to the Dame of Nazareth as a military parade in North Korea and a birth in Kuwait ensue. Surprisingly, synchronicity was the smallest effect One Day’s founder Kyle Ruddick was hoping for when he embarked on the project.

Ruddick hoped for a fusion of humanity where disharmony could become harmony; a similar concept to that which he experienced in 2008 at the World Festival of Sacred Music.

Currently, the One Day on Earth project can be viewed as a public video archive. The project’s success has prompted a feature documentary film – set to be released in fall 2011 – and the second round of One Day begins on Nov. 11, 2011.

One Day on Earth comes at the heels of National Geographic’s “Life in a Day,” a feature documentary that explored June 24, 2010 as shared by the global community in more than 80,000 YouTube videos. The documentary, which hit select theaters in August, pushes individual daily experiences into a humanity frame while giving socially themed documentaries a push into mainstream media. “Life in a Day” is produced by Ridley Scott and directed by Oscar-winning director Kevin Macdonald.

The idea of stitching together the cultures of the world into a cohesive format is a concept that is quickly jumping from medium to medium. Artists at the N-Spired Story offer members an opportunity to lift the veil and share their life stories as interactive T-shirts. The N-Spired team designs a new T-shirt each month based on the votes members receive on their life stories. The shirts are sold for 10 days and a percentage of the proceeds are dedicated to a social act that is congruent with the story.
