Up-and-Coming Celanthropy

Described these days as “celanthropy,” from Bono to George Clooney, celebrities and philanthropy seem to go hand in hand. The famous put their faces on causes they believe in, helping organizations to generate much needed attention and funding. But it’s not just the hot-list celebrities, such as Reese Witherspoon and Angelina Jolie, that are giving back. Here are some other up-and-coming celebs who are making philanthropy their focus.

Dawn Richard, formerly of the band Danity Kane and currently a member of Diddy-Dirty Money on Sean “Diddy” Combs label, is eagerly awaiting her debut solo album. And along her own journey, she recently got to display her philanthropic side, working with Halogen TV’s show “Noble Exchange” to help raise awareness for those who have suffered through natural disasters, namely in Haiti.

Actress Sally Pressman, best known for her role as Roxy LeBlanc on the Lifetime’s “Army Wives,” quickly aligned herself with the Red Cross as she was making her way into the celebrity spotlight. As a member of its Celebrity Cabinet, Pressman is active in donating her time and energy whenever the Red Cross calls on her.

While working on the TV show “90210,” actor Manish Dayal’s character Raj suffered from a terminal illness. After being contacted by CureSonia.com, an organization dedicated to finding a match for one woman, he quickly got linked up to the bone marrow organization Be The Match, helping to promote bone-marrow donations, and focusing on rural India.

Extreme storm chaser Reed Timmer, a meteorologist and TV host known for his daring role on the documentary “Storm Chasers,” puts his money where his mouth is, so to speak, when it comes to philanthropy. This past fall, along with his co-host Tim Samaras, Timmer has been volunteering in Birmingham, Ala., helping two families rebuild after losing their homes in a tornado.

Young actress Juliette Goglia, from the TV series “Shake It Up!” is a good example of a volunteer-oriented up-and-coming celebrity from a younger generation. She has worked with ChildFund International to benefit children in Japan, as well as serving as a “Famous Fone Friend,” calling seriously ill children throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Young actor Moises Arias, best known for his role as Rico on “Hannah Montana,” does a good job of making his way around the volunteer circuit. He has helped build a new playground, has participated as a “Famous Fone Friend,” and volunteered with the Disney Channel Games to raise money for a variety of charities.
