Watch the 2010 “Freedom is Not Free” Veterans Day Parade taking place in New York City online. The opening ceremony kicks off at 10:00 a.m. (EST) in Madison Square Park. New York Yankees World Series MVP and Korean War Veteran Jerry Coleman will serve as Grand Marshal for the parade, which will march throughout NYC from Noon until 2:00 p.m.
The Huffington Post and Causecast are commemorating veterans through the launch of Salute to Service – a week-long blog series sharing first-person accounts from veterans. Readers are encouraged to get involved by sharing the posts, volunteering and/or donating to the veteran cause. The series is meant to highlight compelling and inspiring stories from a population that bears disturbing statistics. The Huffington Post reports that more than 100,000 veterans were homeless in 2009 and veterans “are twice as likely to commit suicide as the general population,” with an average of 18 veterans committing suicide each day. The online news site adds that about 300,000 veterans of Afghanistan and Iraq suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Cable network HBO is premiering “Wartorn: 1861-2010” in honor of Veterans Day. The documentary from James Galdofini (“The Sopranos”) “explores combat and post-traumatic stress disorder from the Civil War to today.” The HBO Documentary Films exclusive airs this Veterans Day, Thursday, Nov. 11 at 9pm (ET/PT).
