NYC DJ Launches 30-Day Volunteer Stint

Trey Morgan is going to have a busy month. In addition to his “day job” as a radio personality on New York’s Z100, he will be volunteering with a different charitable organization each day in September.

Trey, what’s your inspiration for this project? What prompted you to take this on?

I was inspired to start my 30 Deeds, 30 Days campaign when I realized that despite the fact that I’ve always wanted to get involved and help others, I never did because there are so many good causes to choose from and it can get overwhelming. Over the past few years I have donated clothes, volunteered and raced in fundraising 5k runs but never anything consistent. How do you pick just one or a few to focus on? So I decided to really challenge myself and pick 30.

How did you choose which non-profits you’ll be working with?

Since there are so many charities in the New York area, it was easy to pick. I started by thinking of all of the great organizations that I have always wanted to volunteer for but never did. Then I started looking for charities that I wasn’t very familiar with but wanted to learn more about. It was surprisingly easy to compile my list.

Volunteering takes time and energy. How will you balance this project with your responsibilities at work and at home?

Part of the goal is to prove that if I can volunteer for 30 different charities over 30 days while keeping my day job and making it home to my wife for dinner, then anyone can do it for one day. I am not naive, I will have to manage my time carefully. Luckily, I have a great support system.

How can your audience participate? Will there be opportunities for others to join you in your mission?

They can follow my journey on my website www.30deeds30days.com where I will be posting a daily blog, calendar with the charities I will be working with on which day and contact information for all of them. I would love to show up at the Special Olympics Fall Invitational on Sept. 25 and see a group of people who decided to volunteer after being inspired by my journey. I will also encourage my audience to interact and share their volunteer experiences on Facebook and Twitter.

At the end of this journey, how will you measure the success of 30 Deeds, 30 Days?

30 Deeds, 30 Days will be a success if I can bring awareness to how important and easy it is to volunteer while inspiring others to give a little bit of their time. Beyond that, I can not begin to quantify the life changing experiences I will have along the way. This is a journey that I will never forget.

Would you consider doing 30 deeds in 30 days? What organizations would you partner with? Leave us a comment and share your ideas!
