According to a study, loving money or things may not be healthy for your relationship. RELATE Institute, a national research nonprofit, found that couples who weigh money more than other matters have unhappier marriages than couples who don’t care much about material goods.
Researchers surveyed 1,734 married couples on marital satisfaction, conflict patterns, marital communication, marriage stability and other factors. Out of the marriages, 14 percent were matches between two non-materialists. In about 11 percent, the wife was a materialist, while the husband was not. Twenty percent of marrieds were made up of two materialists. Study researcher Jason Carroll noted that a materialist marrying someone who strongly cared about money were worse off.
“We thought it would be the incongruent or unmatched pattern that would be most problematic, where one’s a spender and one’s a saver,” Carroll said. “Our study found that it’s the couples where both spouses have high levels of materialism that struggle the most.”
