We’ve got the best of the Web today, including how yoga is giving back to the world, building a solar house that is affordable and an elite party to beat cancer.

Yoga Gives Back Around the World
For Leslie Hendry, yoga became something more than just an alternative to her regular gym regime. She’s been on a yoga path that includes studying scripture and philosophy and making donations to Yoga Gives Back, a nonprofit that helps women build sustainable livelihoods with microloans. Japanese filmmaker and founder of Yoga Gives Back Kayoko Mitsumatsu says the nonprofit organization gives back to yoga’s homeland, India. Seventy-six percent of India’s population is in poverty, while in the U.S. $6 billion is spent on yoga. “With $25 a month, a struggling woman can start her own business, or a child can go to school. For the cost of one yoga class, you can change a life,” Mitsumatsu said. Although a few years old, Yoga Gives Back has gained momentum, expanding its network of teachers and volunteers. On Sept. 17, Yoga Gives Back launches its first global fundraiser, “Thank You Mother India,” with more than 50 studios from 10 countries participating. The Race to Build a Solar House That Anyone Can Afford
This September, the federal government will invite students from technical and design institutes around the world to bring their energy-efficient, attractive, solar-powered concept houses to the National Mall. This year’s competition includes a new category: affordability. The Empowerhouse team, a competing group that includes students from Parsons, the Stevens Institute, and the Milano School of International Affairs, Management, and Urban Policy, has made affordability and energy-efficiency their focus for the concept house. Since affordability is key, they could receive maximum points if construction comes in or below $250,000. However, the students’ concern go beyond the contest guidelines and points. They are partnering with Habitat for Humanity and the D.C. Department of Housing and Community Development to give this house a permanent place in the DC neighborhood of Deanwood. They even included personal touches such as a large, shady front porch to chat with neighbors, a major social aspect of the neighborhood. The competition begins on Sept. 24 at the National Mall. On Sept. 10, Jennifer Garner will be the mistress of ceremonies for the 7th Annual Pink Party, a benefit to eradicate women’s cancer. High rollers will enjoy a spread of “hors d’oeuvres, bottle service and a gift bag filled with goodies from the likes of Kate Sommerville, MAC and Giada de Laurentiis.” As for entertainment, party-goers can sit back, relax and enjoy a fashion show featuring looks from Stella McCartney, Barbara Bui, J. Mendel and Valentino. All of the proceeds from the Pink Party will go to Cedars-Sinai Women’s Cancer Research Institute at the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute. (via@LookToTheStars_)
