Here’s a compilation of the best of the Web today, including Shaun King’s mountain climb for clean water in Haiti, drought aid for East Africa, and what a high school basketball star did with his $40,000 scholarship.
Climb for Clean Water
Serial entrepreneur Shaun King is less than 30 days away from his climb of Mt. Rainier and his clean water project for Haiti with Northwest Haiti Christian Mission Inc. During the next four years, King will condition his body into mountain climbing shape as he attempts to climb the highest mountain on each of the seven continents. With each climb, he hopes to build awareness and raise funds for seven problems of the world, like modern-day slavery and lack of clean water. He’ll start his training climbing Mt. Rainier this August. All the donated funds go directly to purchase one solar-powered clean water system for a community in Haiti. They are $20,362 from the goal. Help King’s effort to bring clean water to Haiti.
Drought Aid
The International Rescue Committee is responding to a drought that has left hundreds of thousands destitute and starved in East Africa. The drought – the worst in 60 years – has ravaged parts of Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya, damaging already unstable infrastructures. The help and rescue organization has already dispatched relief teams in the region, but is petitioning for more donations.
Slam Dunk Giveaway
A Los Angeles high school basketball star won a free-throw contest where the top prize was a $40,000 scholarship. But what he did with the money will have people admiring him off the court as well. Allan Guei donated the money to the seven runners-up from the free-throw contest. His decision was pretty easy as the Compton high-schooler had already earned a full-ride basketball scholarship to California State University. “I was already well taken care of to go to school, to go to university for free. … I felt like they needed it more than I did,” Guei said.
Recipes for a Good Cause
A recipe e-book for charity is set to roll out during the week of Aug. 8-14. From the creative minds of the HowDoesShe ladies, the book is chock-full of favorite recipes, like blackberry cobbler and buttermilk banana bread, from more than 50 amazing food bloggers. The “50+ favorite bloggers/50 + best recipes” is $15 and all the proceeds will go to the American Red Cross.
Get a Shirt, Give a Shirt
When a man walks out of prison, most of the time he doesn’t have much to start a new life. He needs to find a job, but without proper attire he doesn’t stand a chance. The Get a Shirt, Give a Shirt program gives those ex-prisoners a second chance at life. For every Prison Fellowship T-shirt you buy ($25), a dress shirt and tie will be given to an inmate that is released. Choose from four different styles and help an inmate get through his first job interview.
