We’ve got the best of the Web today, including charity:water’s September campaign, eco-chic military fashion and a unique way to slow down speedy drivers.
Charity:Water September Campaign
Today marks the 5th anniversary for charity:water bringing clean water to 2 million people. So what’s next? The water organization announced today that it’s next mission is to buy a drilling rig. “Our partners in the field are working at capacity to implement our projects. The only way to keep fighting the water crisis at this rate is to buy the equipment our partners need to get the job done faster,” according to its website. And the charity:water needs your help. Every dollar raised will go toward a drilling rig for its partners in Ethiopia. You can help to further its mission by fundraising or through donations. (via @charitywater)
Military Eco-Chic: Army Uniforms Go Solar Down Under
Out with the drab camoflauge prints and combat garb and in with the eco-chic military fashion. Researchers from the Australian National University have created a wearable solar panel for the country’s army men and women. With soldiers donning heavy electronics such as GPS and night vision systems, it’s becoming harder to power all those gadgets. To combat that problem, the cells used in the new panels “have the same thickness of a sheet of paper or a human hair,” said Professor Andrew Blakers, chief investigator behind the wearable solar project. Therefore, the solar panels are flexible, lightweight and allow for high power-to-weight ratios. Another critical feature includes the ability to absorb light from both sides. Idaho-based Transform Solar is expected to have a prototype by December. (via @GOOD)
Awesome Birdhouse Tricks Drivers Into Slowing Down
One retired man has found a way to slow down traffic in front of his UK house, while providing a home for birds. After watching motorists bypass the speed limit, Ian Magee built a birdhouse that looks exactly like a law enforcement traffic camera and installed it in his front yard. “Many motorists travel more than double the speed limit down this hill and tourists also cause a problem,” Magee told the Daily Mail. “I decided that I would make a bird box, for the birds to nest in, and I would make it look like a speed camera to try and fool people into slowing down.” Needless to say, it does work. In addition to drivers slowing down, law enforcement and off-duty ambulance vehicles have been driving more carefully. (via @TreeHugger)
