mustacheFacial hair isn’t just a fashion statement anymore.

This month, men around the world will grow mustaches to raise awareness and funds for men’s health. Founded in 2003 in Melbourne, Australia, Movember “challenges men to change their appearance and the face of men’s health by growing a mustache,” according to the group’s website. In 2010, more than 64,500 participants, raising more than $7.5 million to benefit the Prostate Cancer Foundation and LIVESTRONG.

The rules are simple: register on Nov. 1 (today!) or any time during November with a clean-shaven face, then grow a mustache (no beards or goatees allowed) for the month and get people to donate to your cause. You can register here and you can either start a team or join a team. here’s even an app for tracking your progress.

While the mustache-growing is just for guys, women can become Mo Sistas by donating to the cause, fundraising online, hosting events (Mo Parties) or simply supporting the “Mo Bros” in their lives. And anyone can buy Movember Merch, including posters, T-shirts, Movember business cards and limited-edition TOMS shoes featuring the Movember mustache logo.

The end of Movember is marked with a series of Gala Partés to thank the Mo Bros and Sistas for their fundraising efforts during the month. Partygoers can compete for Best Mo in Character, Miss Movember and Man of Movember 2011. Find a Movember party in your area, and buy your tickets before they sell out.

If you’ve considered bringing back the mustache, now is the time to do it and support a good cause at the same time. Check out the Movember Flickr gallery, choose your mustache style, register (or, if you’re a lady, prompt the men in your life to sign up) and get growing!
