College Students Build Community with Funny Videos

- Two sophomore roommates create funny videos around their college campus.
- They accept donations for their work and donate part of the proceeds to a local nonprofit that benefits at-risk kids and single moms.
- “I think we’re all designed to be a part of something bigger than ourselves,” one of the creators says.

Roommates Aaron Sheats and Josh Helton are founders of the college video troupe.
Belmont University is a Christian college in Nashville, Tenn., best known for its music program. Notable alumni include Brad Paisley, Josh Turner and Trisha Yearwood.
Sophomores Josh Helton of Franklin, Tenn., and Aaron Sheats of Raleigh, N.C., hope to make their mark as well, but in a different way.
During their first week of this school semester, the roommates decided to make funny videos around campus and created the “Be You Crew” video troupe.
They dressed as gorillas and threw bananas from trees, went fishing in water foundations, and army-crawled across campus deterring the use of sidewalks. (See the video at the top of this story for an example.)
In the first month, their videos were watched thousands of times. But, they have other goals besides making popular videos.

They also raise money with the help of a gumball machine, which is popular on campus.
They are taking donations. Half goes to production and equipment, and the other half goes to Front Porch Ministry, a relationship-driven ministry in East Nashville that allows people to walk in relationship with at-risk kids and single moms.
“They’ve been trying to get a mentorship program going for a while, and I think they’d want kids around our age to be involved with that,” said Helton, who has been building relationships himself with students who live on his floor.
Helton hopes to bring laughter and unity to his college community through the videos and promote the work of Front Porch Ministry.
“Laughing and having that common ground is really a great way to bring people together. I think we’re all designed to be a part of something bigger than ourselves,” Helton said.
