More than 27 million people are trapped in slavery today and the Freedom Awards recognize the organizations and individuals working to end modern day slavery. Like Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman and William Wilberforce who have gone before them, today’s generation of anti-slavery heroes — many of them former slaves — risk their lives in the fight against slavery.
“The reason why I’m so compelled to do this work is because I’m a survivor of sex trafficking,” said Tina Frundt, honored with this year’s Frederick Douglas Freedom Award. “I don’t think people understand that there can be sex slaves in the United States” Frundt was kidnapped as a teenager in Chicago and trapped as a sex slave in Ohio for more than a year.
The nonprofit Free the Slaves launched the Freedom Awards in 2008. This year’s event is on Sunday evening, Nov. 7, at Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center near Los Angeles. Creativity expert Sir Ken Robinson will be emceeing the event.
