Activist Artist Wants to Save the Amazon

From the prince of parties in Hollywood hills to a singer/songwriter topping the charts in Northern Europe, Andre Freeman is poised to become an international sensation. But Freeman’s ambition goes beyond becoming a star. This up and coming “activist artist” is on a mission to change the world:

“[Another artist and I] decided that we didn’t just want to be artists that try to just do music for profit, but that we wanted to be activist artists, like Sean Penn; that try to do things that try to change the world even if it’s just one person at a time.”

Freeman began to make his name as Wonderland when his popular “mansion parties” in Hollywood began drawing A-list guests such as Mark Wahlberg, Tommy Lee, Tara Reid, The Osbournes Kids, Pink and more. In 2004, Wonderland began writing music and he quickly earned recognition as a star performer with three honorable mentions in the 2004 Billboard World Songwriting Contest. By 2007, he had edged his way past 50 cent, Kanye West and The Pussycat Dolls to make Number 1 on Swiss radio. Now, as Freeman prepares to break out big in the U.S., he has already begun to think big – big change. He is targeting the Amazon rainforest because, the way he sees it, the Amazon is “one of the most important causes in the world right now.”

Blue Planet Biomes estimates that 20 percent of the earth’s oxygen comes from the Amazon. The World Wildlife Foundation says the stores of carbon in the South American rainforest are integral to the health of the planet, but rapid deforestation is threatening both the natural life and the indigenous communities that thrive in the Amazon. RainTree reports that “one-fifth of all free-flowing fresh water on Earth” comes from the rainforest. What interests Wonderland most, however, are the “sacred plants” that are unique to the Amazon.

“There are medicines that we’ve never even tried that directly effect our DNA, that the [local] shamans use to keep people well… plants that can save humanity,” Freeman asserted.

Raising awareness is what Wonderland wants to focus on first. The “activist artist” has teamed up with AmazonWatch.org to encourage the public to become more knowledgeable about this South American jungle that’s roughly the size of the continental United States. The singer/songwriter and the environmental organization are planning an awareness event in Hollywood where “fashion meets music meets art meets humanity.” The event, scheduled for Oct. 23, will include a fashion show featuring clothing from Daniel James along with musical performances from Wonderland, Maeyson Muse, Nadine Casanova and other artists who support the cause. A showing of the award-winning documentary “Crude” will highlight the infamous “Amazon Chernobyl” case, where the indigenous communities of the Amazon took on U.S. oil giant Chevron for its abuse and destruction of the rainforest – which created a “death zone” the size of Rhode Island.

Even a shaman will be present to help educate attendees about the riches unique to the Amazon.

“If you were there and you lived there, you would know how beautiful the Amazon is and of course you would want to save it,” Wonderland said.
