World Oceans Day

The world’s oceans boast beautiful diversity with its fishes, crabs, sea turtles and coral reefs. But, the marine habitat is in danger. Runoff wastes and toxins are harming sea life. Coupled with overfishing methods, the threat increases for the ocean and our food resources.

On June 8, the global community will celebrate World Oceans Day. This year’s theme, “Youth: The Next Wave for Change,” challenges our youth to raise awareness about ocean conservation in their communities.

Whether you’re young or just young at heart, here are six ways to celebrate World Oceans Day.

  • Attend a World Oceans Day event. Find out how your state will celebrate ocean conservation, and participate in an activity.
  • Contact your state representive. Whether it’s through letter, email or phone call, police your concerns about the plight of our oceans and marine life and how they need to be protected.
  • Reduce your carbon footprint. Take the first step in making daily choices that will help conserve our ocean’s resources. Public transportation, walking, or bicycling your way through town helps reduce the amount of carbon emissions that pollute the ocean.
  • Save the oceans one bite at a time. Choose seafood that is sustainably harvested, such as wild Alaskan Salmon, farmed crawfish, or Tilapia. You can download the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s sustainable seafood pocket guide to help you choose ocean-friendly seafood in your area.
  • Spend the day at the beach. A day at the beach is a great opportunity to appreciate the beauty, discover diverse creatures and learn about the ocean.
  • Wear blue, tell two. Wear blue clothing to raise awareness for ocean conservation. Tell people why you’re wearing blue and share two facts about ocean protection. Check out these resources to get you started for the “Wear Blue, Tell Two” campaign.
