5 Ideas For An Unforgettable Staycation

With our wallets under as much pressure as Santa’s belt, why not use this holiday season to stay close to home? A “staycation” can be a memorable, affordable and restful way to spend your Christmas vacation. So turn off the phone, suspend your Facebook account, set the e-mail to auto-reply (seriously, no work; you’re on vacation!) and try one of these five ideas for making the most of a staycation.
Become a tourist
Don’t be fooled by familiarity. Like any other vacation, take some time beforehand to research, plan and budget your staycation. Treat your hometown like you would a far-off distant land. Ask around and make lists. Where would you take out-of-town friends? What is your city known for? The Happy Housewife’s Frugal Living blog has done most of the hard work for you, amassing a nation-wide list of staycation ideas. Through the eyes of a tourist, you may develop a new affection and appreciation for the place you call home.
Virtual destinations
Make your dream destination a local reality. America is truly a melting pot of cultures and nationalities, allowing the freedom and imagination to pursue all things British, Thai or Chilean (to name just a few) for the week. Research and patronize region-specific restaurant options (even the smallest cities have an Irish pub or Middle-Eastern café within driving distance). Try your hand at authentic recipes. Scour flea markets and antique shops for imported goods or classy knock-offs. Walk the neighborhoods of your city’s equivalent to Chinatown or Little Italy. Then, finish off your “travels” by throwing a destination-themed party for New Year’s.
Bring a favorite book or movie to life
If your children are budding booklovers, why not spend a few days bringing their favorite stories to life? A day searching for the door to Narnia followed up with Turkish Delight and Raspberry Cordial will leave the entire family with enchanted memories. If movies are more your thing, reenact your favorite scenes: who wouldn’t want to browse The Shop Around the Corner from You’ve Got Mail or spend the week as carefree and well-dressed as Holly Golightly?
“Maid Service!”
Hire cleaning service to come by mid-week and pick up after you. Nothing feels less like a vacation than doing laundry or dirty dishes. This could be the perfect time to splurge a tiny bit with the cash you save by not traveling. A clean kitchen, shiny bathroom and turned-down sheets will temporarily trick you into thinking you’re at a four-star hotel.
Set out to accomplish a just for you, just for fun goal
A staycation allows you the time and freedom to spend all day, for several days, working on something special and personal. A greenhouse, a short story, a patchwork quilt or A Tale of Two Cities can all be done in a matter of days. Accomplishment and pride will be your reward. Just don’t get too down and dirty: a kitchen remodel does not count as a staycation.
Even though you’re staying in, your staycation should still fill your hard drive with photos and your heart with memories.
Where are you going for the holidays?
