By Cara Davis | March 31, 2011 at 8:13 am
There are no shortage of sites that cover positive social change and giving back. Some are better than others. We’ve compiled a list of the 15 best social good sites (in our opinion) that are creating the best stories about positive change in our world today.
Did we miss one? Send us a link at http://halogentv.com/submit.
GOOD is the thinking citizen’s guide to life. It provides original research and attention to issues important to our life and times. (Hint: sign up for their “One good thing a day” email.)
2. The Huffington Post (“Impact” section)
(@HuffingtonPost, Facebook, RSS)
The Huffington Post has the most comprehensive coverage because of the army of folks providing them content.
3. Mashable (“Social Good” section)
If you’re into technology, social media and social good, Mashable’s got you covered.
This isn’t a content site, but a must-have newsletter that highlights socially good innovations. Every day it features an socially good, innovative idea and encourages readers to take a collective action toward its cause.
MTV’s stellar act blog is “where fist-pumping and lending a helping hand collide.” They highlight “risk-takers and change-makers” and encourage readers to take actions (and number them on their site).
(@PlanetGreen, Facebook, RSS)
An initiative of the Discovery network, Treehugger brings environmental and social issues to the forefront, championing heroes and worthy ideas. Treehugger’s mothership Planet Green also has a good content site although I’ve heard they’re about to undergo and overhaul.
7. USA Network (Character Blog)
(@Character_USA, Facebook, RSS)
This is one of the most creative blogs on social good topics we’ve seen. USA Network’s Character Blog highlights truly unique stories about people and ideas positively influencing our cultural landscape.
8. CNN (“Freedom Project” blog)
(@CNNFreedom, Facebook, RSS)
CNN is running a year-long blog series spotlighting the horrors of modern-day slavery and highlight the stories of those fighting against it.
(@whatgives, Facebook, RSS)
WhatGives!? provides information and tools that can help nonprofits to raise money and awareness. Check out their donation app for social fundraising efforts.
(@LooktotheStars, Facebook, RSS)
This site reports on celebrity charity work and causes. While it can get monotonous, it’s great to see celebrity coverage that isn’t tabloid material.
11. USAToday (“Your Life: Kindness” section)
(@USATKindness, Facebook -USA Today)
USA Today’s Kindness section has human interest stories centered on social good that inspire and celebrate heroes of social innovation.
(@Causecast, Facebook, RSS)
If you’re looking for interaction, join Causecast and stay in the loop on causes. Their site has a field where you can enter your zip code and find local volunteer opps.
Care2 News Network features socially conscious news and video shared and rated by the community.
14. The Daily Beast (“Causes” section)
(@TheDailyBeast, Facebook, RSS)
This section is rarely updated, but it’s good when it is. Here’s to hoping they step up their coverage.
15. AOL News (“Good News” section)
(@goodnewsaol, Facebook, RSS)
Although more news oriented, AOL’s site has a smattering of feel good news that relates to positive social change. Mostly it’s just feel-good reading (and who couldn’t use more of that?).
