Free Starbucks. Bring a reusable travel mug to Starbucks Friday and they’ll fill it with coffee or tea (hot or iced) for free.
Create a sustainable look. Top eco-fashion bloggers recently competed in a Spring Style Off. The results are in. Use their pieces as inspiration for your own. For more inspiration, see this video from Shoestring, or participate in this vintage restyle contest.
Make a pledge. The editors at GOOD magazine are challenging readers to make a pledge in honor of Earth Day to do something to lessen your impact on the environment. You can also take the “Not One Sock Pledge” and recycle any scrap of clothing you want to discard.
Recycle anything. Soles4Souls and Old Navy will take your shoes and recycle them. Office Depot is accepting any pen and turning them into TerraCycle, who will create new office-supply products with them. Solo Squared cups will donate 2 cents to Keep America Beautiful for every cup recycled. Garnier will collect any cosmetics packaging for recycling.
There’s an app for that. Even Earth Day has its own app. The Earth Day Network and Facebook have partnered to create an app, A Billion Acts of Green, which allows you to declare one or more things you’re doing for the Earth. It’s empowering to see your small act combined with thousands of others.
If you’re near Brooklyn on Earth Day, visit the Textile Arts Center in Park Slope. Environmental fiber artist Abigail Doan is playing host to “Fashioning Self and the Environment,” an open house related to slow fashion strategies and environmental outreach. And, environmentally minded Sprout Watches has a Pop-Up Shop launching in NYC Friday.
Plant a tree. Lowe’s is giving away 1 million White Pine plugs. Plant or donate it to someone who can use it. Or, for $1 you can join a campaign to restore and protect the world’s forests.
Organize a community picnic. Picnic for the Planet has a website where you can organize a community picnic and celebrate the outdoors with good food and great people.
Support clean water orgs. Clean water affects everything, and should be the starting place for improving the planet. This new video from our friends at charity: water – and voiced by actor Kristen Bell – illustrates what an impact clean water makes in everyone’s life.
Watch TV. Halogen has culled the best of its “green” programming for a day-long celebration. We’re also premiering three new shows that are all about sustainability. Don’t miss “My Green House,” “Eco House Challenge” and “The Un-Road Trip” (airing online at 8pm ET.)
How do you plan to celebrate Earth Day?
