Have you ever considered what would happen if all the semis on the roads that you see every day just disappeared? If the truck industry went on strike? According to the drivers interviewed in “Big Rig,” restaurants and grocery stores would run out of food in just two or three days. Gas stations would run out of gas in a matter of hours. And that’s just the beginning! “Big Rig” is a new documentary from director Doug Pray that explores contemporary American life, as seen through the eyes of long-haul truck drivers.

With today’s modern conveniences, it’s easy to forget about the extensive network of trucks that enable oranges to grace the shelves of a grocery in New Jersey, and the sacrifices and risks those truckers face daily to make that happen.

This documentary features the stories of several drivers and the issues they face – from fuel costs to crime – all set the backdrop of the beautiful American countryside. It’s an hour and 40-minute piece that spans 21,000 miles, 45 states, and dozens of truck stops. Shot during four, two-week periods, director Pray and a sound man would approach everyday truckers at truck stops and hitch rides. The result is a little slice of Americana chronicling a specialized world that supports the U.S. economy on 18 wheels.
