Halogen Element: Justice

The other day my family was leaving a restaurant and walking to an ice cream parlor … an all too often habit in our family … when we noticed something on the sidewalk. It was the most beautiful butterfly I had ever seen, like one of those giant sparkly ones on It’s a Small World when you are going through the South America Canal (only not quite that big), lying on the sidewalk struggling to fly.

My children and I bent down and saw that one of its wings was torn. Call me sentimental and laugh all you want but watching this beautiful butterfly struggling to fly, knowing that its probably not going to survive much longer, brought a tear to my eye. We sat on the sidewalk and literally prayed out loud that God would either miraculously mend its wing (which I totally believe could happen!) or let it die so that it didn’t have to suffer.

Have you ever had a moment like that? Maybe even a more serious moment where you just sat and wished things didn’t have to be that way?

I believe that knit inside each of us is a longing for justice, that overwhelming desire to set things right. It’s that feeling you get when you’re watching a movie like Shawshank Redemption or The Count of Monte Cristo and the leading guys get imprisoned for a crime they didn’t commit. Everything in you wants to stand up a scream, “That’s not right!!”

My little butterfly may only be a single grain of sadness in a world wrecked by pain and suffering, but it is also a moment that reminds me to stop and take notice of the things around us, our environment and our neighbors who need our help and may not have a voice to cry out.

I’m proud to introduce to you three original series Halogen is offering, which stand up for justice by giving a voice to the voiceless.

  • Tainted Love takes on the sex trafficking industry right here on domestic soil. *Each year, 100,000-300,000 children are at risk for sexual exploitation and it’s time their voices are heard. This series documents the real life stories of victims and with some help from the FBI, we’ll share hidden camera evidence that will make you stand up in your seat and want to do something to stop the problem. We’re counting on it!
  • What’s Going On features a new celebrity host each week who will take on a world issue that you need to know about. They’ll do more than educate you on the situation, they’ll get first hand experience as they work to BE a part of the solution themselves. I hope that this series will inspire you to see that change is possible, in even the bleakest circumstances when people stand together, learn about what’s going on and refuse to be silent.
  • Keep it Green is a fast-moving magazine format talk show with decorating tips, insightful interviews and new ways to approach a greener more sustainable lifestyle. Our generation says that we care about the environment, but what are we doing about it? This earth-friendly show will no doubt give you ideas and the jump you need to keep it green.

*U.S. Cong. Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act of 2005. PUBLIC LAW 109-164 Jan. 4,2005
